After a week-long period of community votes, we are now ready to announce the winners! We are excited to announce the winners of the Black Mesa Valentine's Day Baking Contest! We received numerous entries showcasing your creativity and baking skills, and we were thrilled by the response. It is one of the best remakes of all time. Finally, there’s also of course the completely reimagined Xen, which is just an incredible spectacle to play all the way through.Īll in all, Black Mesa stands out on its own as a brand-new experience while still being faithful to the original game. The gameplay has seen a bit of an overhaul too, the gun play is still very solid, enemy encounters are a lot more dynamic and the overall level design I’d argue is much better paced than the original, cutting down on some of the more tedious sections and focusing more on its set pieces and the original’s highlights. The sound design is also incredible with all the weapons being very satisfying to fire and couple with a soundtrack that’s just AWESOME! It’s a vivid reimagining of Half-Life, while still maintaining the original’s tone and atmosphere. The updated visuals however serve more of a purpose than just to be jaw droppingly gorgeous, but it enhances the environmental storytelling in ways that the original couldn't with the far more detailed world. Its visually stunning the entire way through from the opening Tram Ride to Xen. The presentation is the obvious thing to highlight. It is an upgrade to Half-Life in almost everything. With all that said, this remake is phenomenal. Also, while I do think that Black Mesa is a better game than Half-Life, I do still think there's a lot of value in playing Half-Life first just to appreciate how much has been overhauled and changed while still staying recognisable. Just to preface this I wouldn't recommend playing Black Mesa before Half-Life 2, just to get better acquainted with the Source engine and properly recognising some characters is also a nice detail. Black Mesa is the definitive way to experience Half Life.
